Taryn Jerling
Education Consultant, Office of the Assistant Undersecretary for Educational Affairs
Working internationally has allowed me to see the common threads of challenges across the GCC in particular and the many different international curricula and approaches in the Education as well as Quality approaches. This has allowed me see what issues arose as well as see where successes where found and then work on how those can be Localized. This has Given me an insight on sector wide perspective for Qatar based on regional and international approaches and strategies. Being a fully qualified teacher in the UK I initially started my teaching and educational management career in the 14 + age group including vocational education, employer engagement and aligning training to sector requirements. I moved to higher education sector where I worked on quality and inspections as well as teacher training having been identified as a best practice teacher. This allowed me to start my career in quality assurance, project management and senior management especially in areas of leadership and management, classroom practice, teaching and learning practice. I have focused on International Private Schooling, Quality and Strategy across the education sector in recent years. When in the GCC I have worked with various government ministries on a number of different government initiatives from teacher training, resource development, PPP, Inspection of schools with multiple curricula, quality review across the sector and management information systems/Data requirements. Roles of strategy planning (including KPI development and Quality Assurance/Framework development) and implementation. As a trained Project Manager I am comfortable with this approach and believe a project management approach to work streams or operations as well as in individually identified projects leads to a best practice approach. This allows for mitigation of risks and issues and embedding of Quality Assurance across all work. In my work with quality and school improvement across the Gulf region (worked in Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the other Emirates) I focused on inspections and school improvement. Helping establish DSIB as the project manager and the same with ADEC and MoE in UAE. Training inspectors in Bahrain and doing feasibility study for Kuwait. Planning the establishment of a school inspection and school improvement for Oman and doing the same currently in Qatar. I have also worked in SECS Private School office to assist in reviewing systems and processes and strategic planning, with investor and funder engagement. This has allowed me to be exposed to international curricula requirements and visions and to see how private schooling in international centres like Qatar and the Emirates needs a primary vision, drive, quality and approach.
