Paul Silverwood
Education Consultant
Dr Paul Silverwood was educated in the UK at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School in Wakefield. He read Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge and received his PhD in Nuclear Chemistry from the University of Manchester. Following time as a research scientist in the chemical industry, he moved to London and trained as a teacher.
Paul has taught in four schools, each of them rated ‘excellent’ by the Independent Schools’ Inspectorate, and been in senior leadership roles for the past 10 years. From 2009, he was Head Master of Queen Margaret’s, York, a boarding and day school which achieved outstanding examination results and ranked in the UK’s top 1% of schools for ‘value added’ achievement. Paul also served as a schools’ inspector, adviser for the Global Perspectives Pre-University course pioneered by Cambridge Assessment and found time to pursue his interests in sailing, skiing, classical dance and choral music.
Seeking new experiences and challenges, Paul and his family moved to Dubai in the summer of 2014. Paul was asked to set up the educational aspects of the new and totally independent Hartland International School, which opened at the end of August this year.
Paul believes that to be successful children must be happy and confident and that a true all-round education, fit for the twenty-first century, has its foundations in the development of personal character alongside academic rigour. He advocates the role of the school is to inspire children with new ideas, encourage them as they learn to think for themselves and then challenge them to transform the lives of others.
