Chris J. Perumalla Ph.D
Director, Division of Teaching Laboratories, Faculty of Medicine
Dr. Christopher Perumalla is a Faculty member in the Department of Physiology, Faculty of Medicine, at the University of Toronto. He is a passionate educator, who has been teaching in lecture and laboratory courses for the past two decades. Chris has been recognized for his outstanding teaching and sustained educational leadership with twelve teaching awards including the President’s Teaching Award, the highest such award at UofT.
As Director of the Division of Teaching Laboratories in the Faculty of Medicine in the past ten years, Chris overseas the laboratory teaching in the Life Sciences programs and ensures that the undergraduate lab courses provide them expose to and experience with state of the art research equipment in enhancing their academic experience.
Chris is also an innovator and a visionary leader. Chris has harnessed his experience as an educator and academic counsellor in identifying a gap in translating student desires to pursue a career of their choice in health sciences. This led him to design and develop the Faculty of Medicine’s Youth Summer Program (MED YSP), which has thus far impacted thousands of students. The program provides high school students with an exclusive glimpse into the world of medicine, medical research and other health science professional programs. In the past three years of its operation, MED YSP has impacted Canadian and international high school students from nearly 20 countries. Chris was awarded the mentorship award by the Canadian Health Institute of Research for his impact on high school students through MED YSP. Chris has also spearheaded the design and delivery of Faculty of Medicine’s first fully operational online course, which now has led to the development of several other such courses.
Chris obtained his Bachelor and Masters Degrees from Osmania University in India, and a second Masters and Doctoral Degrees from University of Waterloo, Canada. He moved to University of Toronto for postdoctoral training in 1986, and it was during this period he discovered his passion for teaching. He joined the Department of Physiology in 1993. Chris has spoken at several educational conferences around the world in the past five years.
