When Chris Whittle was a college student, he attended an educational reform conference and was deeply moved by the ideas he encountered. Over the past 50 years, Chris has led the reform movement, and developed notions about an ideal education system. He believes that a truly modern school will:

  1. Be global yet connected to its community;
  2. Be focused more on individual students than groups of them;
  3. Be a one-stop-shop for all educational needs;
  4. Not require a vow of poverty to work there;
  5. Use tech but knows that computers will never care about children;
  6. Is architecturally more like Weworks and less like a classroom;

School leadership often asks two critical questions: what do effective schools look like and how does our school compare against them? This session will address the first of these by highlighting the correlates or indicators of successful schools and then demonstrate a methodology by which schools can seek answers to the second. Whilst there is no single or universal truth in these matters, there are things we can learn from the substantial evidence base that exists from school effectiveness research globally. This session provides an introduction to such endeavours.

Both the British and Chinese education systems have their strengths and their weaknesses. The typical Chinese bilingual school imports some western curriculum components and the typical UK bilingual school imports some Chinese components (to stay on the right side of Chinese education law). The Fusion curriculum starts from a different place – it combines the best components of East and West into one integrated programme within an integrated management structure.

How prepared is the next generation of leaders to take the helm at our
international schools, whether in China or elsewhere? Current leadership development programming perpetuates a traditional model that is arguably ripe for transformation. Dr Kevin Ruth will share how we might construct innovative leadership development programmes that prepare next-generation leaders for success.
Kevin J Ruth, Executive Director, ECIS

David will look at leadership of schools with an international curriculum in China. Leading a good school – of whatever make-up – has many ingredients that are the same the world over, however every leader has to find a combination of general principles and local context to be successful. David is Executive Headmaster of YK Pao School in Shanghai, and former Headmaster of Dulwich College Beijing. He was previously a head of two secondary schools in England.
He will use his experience in China and the UK to give some pointers on how to improve our schools.
David Mansfield, Executive Headmaster, YK Pao School

Once the euphoria surrounding the decision to set up a new school overseas dies down, attention must focus on th e many different aspects which must be considered in detail and the timescale in which all of these must come together to make for a successful opening. The speaker will attempt to highlight some of the choices to be made including areas such as facilities specification, human and physical resourcing and systems design.
John Birchall, Education Director, Dipont Education Group

Schools entering the Chinese education market must, in delivering their

We believe active, social and personal learning space design is a generator for great schools and will present how specific applications of this philosophy define either a ‘heritage’ or a ‘future’ school character.
Through our experience designing and delivering international and bilingual schools across Asia we see the market will soon trend toward recognizable differentiation. Bridging both the expectation and experience gaps between operators and development groups is essential for successful Chinese bilingual school partnerships.
Broadway Malyan would like to share our understanding of how to ‘solve a site’ in ways that generate unique experiences for students, teachers, and parents; and define a common opinion for key stakeholders.

Student formative assessment data provides essential insight for school
leadership teams to help them deliver better educational outcomes through personalising teaching and by identifying individual learning support needs. The data also informs effective school self-evaluation and the evidence for accreditations and inspections. James Neill and Jared Nolan will discuss the importance of this data and how an effective assessment programme can be implemented.
James Neill, International Director, GL Education
Jared Nolan, Head of Primary, Nord Anglia British International School

In an effort to promote internationalism, learn about other cultures, and give young learners a foundation in the English language, more and more preschools and kindergartens in China are offering a bilingual (Putonghua and English) program. In these bilingual programs and learning environments, English and Putonghua teachers share a classroom and work collaboratively together to ensure that the planning, curriculum, and learning outcomes are in sync, so that the children will benefit from a sound bilingual program. In the major cities of China, young learners are being exposed to Putonghua and English schooling, and as these young learners get older, many of them will be expected to be able to understand, speak, read and write in both Putonghua and English. China is a thriving and developing country with a fast-growing economy and a place where most of its people value education as one of the most important assets. As China continues to open up to the world, there is a focus on developing bilingual learners, worldly thinkers, and global citizens. In this presentation, the developmental effects of bilingual learning in preschools and kindergartens in China will be explored and discussed.
Dr. Maggie Koong, Chief Principal, Victoria (China) Educational
Organisation
