Nigel Austen

BC Program Principal, Maple Leaf International School - Chongqing

Nigel Austen is Principal at Maple Leaf International School Chongqing (MLIS-C), located in the People’s Republic of China. MLIS-C follows British Columbia (BC), Canada curriculum, is taught in English by BC-certified teachers, and undergoes a rigorous annual inspection from the BC Ministry of Education. MLIS-C also gained accreditation from AdvancED after a successful External Review in June 2016. Maple Leaf Educational System is China’s largest private international school system with 20,000 registered students, and Canada’s first and largest offshore school system. For the past two decades Nigel has enjoyed working in various leadership roles with talented students and educators in China, Japan and Canada.

Originally from Victoria, BC, Canada, Nigel holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History and Political Science from the University of Victoria, and a Bachelor of Education degree and a Masters of Education degree from the University of British Columbia. He was awarded the Maple Leaf Medal of Excellence and Honour in 2014 at the 20th Anniversary of Maple Leaf Educational Systems Ceremony. Nigel has been active improving school assessment and evaluation, professional development, staff building, athletics, technology in the classroom, curriculum, and blending the best of east and west educational practices.
